During the May meeting we had a diverse panel of published authors come and answer questions about publishing, from traditional to self-published, large and small presses.
Some of the key takeaways were:
Traditional publishing is great for not having to worry about much more than writing and some promotion
However, traditional publishing comes with some loss of creative control
Small presses provide a stepping stone where the author does not have to do all the work (editing and covers) on their own
However, many small presses are overworked and responses or deliverables may be delayed
Self-publishing retains the most creative control and schedule control
However, many who self-publish must learn to do all the bits and bobs or hire out of pocket for editors, cover artists and more.
There are a lot of pro’s and cons to each method of publishing, and we’re excited to bring a part two to this panel when during the fall.
Poetry Slam
During our May meeting we also had our first poetry slam! Check out a few of the fun haiku’s our members came up with on the spot.

May your garden be full of flowers.
May your tacos be spicy, too.
May your horse win at the derby.
May the force be strong with you.
